Photography is such an interesting art, and I wanted to merely learn more about it, opposed to telling a story in the traditional sense. I also didn't want to get to bogged down with the technical side of photography, but rather the STYLE of each photographer, and how they approach their subjects. In my studies, I've learned that artistic success in photography and cinematography, and in all art, isn't tied to technical knowledge alone, but rather heavily determined by the unseen passion, inner turmoil, and vision of the artist. RE-LOADED because of some photo export problems in iMovie: Strobist photoshoot in a harvested field near Hanover with german politician Dorota Szymanska. I used two SB-800 through an umbrella and one SB-800 on-camera to trigger them with Nikons CLS. Later I changed the SB-800 with PocketWizards because of the harsh sunlight what makes it very difficult to use the CLS and attached a SB-900 with a reflector on the ground. A short BTS editorial video clip we shot last Monday featuring two Seattle designers, Kimmi Designs and Mac Fashion House. We included the lighting diagrams for each image created. We use very simple lighting, less is more and appears natural. We spend a great deal of time on poses and expressions and making sure the wardrobe looks good.

There are several lighting positions that photographers have developed over the years. People like George Hurrell, who used tungsten to shoot stars, used these lighting positions. Learn to identify what a butterfly or Rembrandt light is. Knowing these positions, and where the light placed to create them, will help you see how photographers light their images. These are departure points from which you will create your own look and direction. Its hard to depart from someplace you have never been there. This will teach you the basics and give you a good foundation to build on. This video is not as slick as some of the others we have done but it has great basic instructions on portrait lighting. (Don't miss the ending its the most exciting part!)

You want to achieve a soft, elegant and natural position of the hands so that they do not become a distraction.
